Advert Seasonality
Throughout the year there is a range of adverts that are put into place according to the months in which they fit in.This may be due to a certain event or the weather or other effects for example the amount of disposable income that people will have.Within this blog I will indicate the reason as to why certain adverts are shown in certain months and why some advertisements will cost more to show to the audience.Lastly I will also analyse some adverts.
What sort of adverts do we see at certain time of the year?
Within this blog I am going to state the different adverts in which are advertised throughout the year and why they are advertised at that certain time of the year. Therefore my main focus is going to be on the adverts and the months in which they are advertised.
During the year there are months in which adverts get high views as opposed to the other months of the year. The months in which viewing figures will be the highest are the months coming up to Christmas but mainly December as people will be celebrating the festive season.
People also have different time spans in which they have when watching television and this is also impacted by the season and weather. For example, in winter people mainly watch television for 2 hours and 2 minutes according to statistics.
However due to different occurrences people may also be unable to watch television or not have interest in it.This main reason behind this is because people will be enjoying the weather outside in July and August. Therefore as it will be summer people will be spending most of their time outside.
The following is the transitions of the advertisement industry:
Advertisements Examples:
IKEA
This is an Ikea advert in which there is two characters (couple) looking for each other but are unable to due to things cluttered everywhere. However as the advert proceeds they find a solution as they start find storage space to place the cluttered items therefore conveying that Ikea can provide good storage and furniture for its customers. The advert is a narrative as it shows us the story on how the couple faces trouble to see each other then finally find a solution in which enables them to meet again. Music is a big part of this advert as the characters sing throughout the advert to convey the main message of the advert in which it they start by singing on the reason why they are not living together in which is further solved at the end of the advert due to Ikea.
Mise-en-scene
John Lewis advert
The advert I am going to analyse is the John Lewis new year new start advert. This advert is a good example of distinct change from something negative to positive as John Lewis tries to put across the good change in which its products will make in one's life. The advert is a realist as it shows a normal character seeking for his old belongings only to realise they do not function as well as they used to hence why he seeks John Lewis therefore showing the advance in the things that John Lewis has. There are a range of strategies used in this advertisement as it effectively uses music in order to engage with the audience's emotion due to the low volume start in which increases gradually in order to show the change in the from sadness to happiness that is conveyed by the character therefore also having an effect on the audience.Overall this advert is effective in conveying the message it aims to put across as it uses emotional connection and a range of other techniques. The advert also has a good concept.

Connotation
|
Camera shots and angles
|
The camera shots within this advert are mainly focused in the main
character which is the child dress in the darth Vader clothing from star
wars.
|
The focus on the main character is done in order to build up the
funny scene that is shown at the end of the advert.
|
Linear/Non linear
|
The advert is linear based as it goes in order all the way through to
the funny scene in which is shown at the end.
|
Use of linear is effective within this advert as it makes the
audience have curiosity and anxious as to what will happen at the end in
which the advert then delivers.
|
Sound
|
The sounds used are the darth vader theme tune along with sound
effects from the car and props used.
|
As the advert is based around the theme of star wars this then makes
a connection with what is occurring.
|
Structure
|
This is a realist advert however the character is playing an anti-realist
role as he tries to use the powers in which darth vader portrays in star wars.
|
The stricture is well constructed as the mixture of realist and
anti-realist form a good concept for the advert.

Psychographics
Within the media industry advertisers have different types of audience in which they aim for. Therefore there are a range of points that advertisers do in order to target the specific target audience in which they have for example specific people may have a preference of specific text. Therefore in order to reach the audience that they want the advertisers have to ensure that they fulfil all the requirements that the audience have.
Men 16-34
Young men within this age group have hard preferences to identify as opposed to women within the same age group. Therefore advertisers having a range of things in which they try to identify such as the statistics regarding their family size as most don't have children and are single. Therefore these factors have an impact on how advertisements are conveyed to them along with other factors such as their social factors and their work as they will be highly focusing on earning a living at this age.
Other things in which are highly used by advertisers is the interest of sports from this age group as they have a high interest in sport. Also following upon the choices that young men within this age group prefer in terms of media these are newspapers, cinema and radio media based communication based on sport and music.
This age group also has an interest in magazines as magazine producers have started to create magazines mainly aimed at man.An example of a men's magazine between the age of 16-34 is as shown within the maxim magazine picture above showing a very well known star (Megan Fox) who is said to be a foxy lady which does not refer to her being a fox but being a beautiful and sexy woman which is also reflected in the picture. The magazine also has topics in which this age group as an interest in.Therefore this attracts men within this age group hence why it is also used by other magazines such as Zoo and Nuts in which also aim for this target market.
Men ABC1
Britain contains of 12.8 million ABC1 men meaning that this is a big market as its accounts for over a quarter of all adults.Within this group the men are likely to be married rather than separated or divorced. These men are hard driven and focus on their careers meaning that they have a high disposable income to spend.
As they focus within their careers the people within this category have a high impact within the creative media industry. One part in which they use is the Internet as over 60% have access to broadband. The sites in which they mostly surf involve travel, sport, finance and news sites
Furthermore in looking at other sources of media this category of upmarket men do not highly use magazines except those based on health as the one shown above therefore helping them in keeping fit and they also regularly listen to the radio in seeking for news and sport.
However the downfall of this audience is their lack of time despite them often having time to look up on media they find interest in.Looking into the main time the media industry should target for this category this should be done within the weekend as the view rating increase with a high amount of the views being on a Friday and Saturdays which is mainly due to sports. They also tend to watch other programs such as documentaries, news and other comedy based programs. As they reflect their love for sport this shows why they pay for channels such as sky sports etc.
Men C2DE
This group has a high interest in technology that helps in enhancing their television experience for example cinema systems and other forms of technology which is likely the reason behind their high interest in television. The main television programs in which they watch are sports such as football, rugby and F1. As some people work within this age group they have significantly less time to spare in spending time on media. However most people within this age group have retired meaning that they have more time to spend on things that they enjoy which therefore includes media. Therefore television plays a big role within their lives as they find enjoyment in watching programs on BBC,Discovery,National Geographic etc.
They are also mainly interested in news related programs and they also like other entertaining programs including soaps along with game shows such as countdown and etc. Moreover half of the men within this age group tend to listen to the radio daily (including BBC radio and Classic FM).However they do not have a high interest in magazines despite them having an interest with the topics which are based on gardening, golf and classic cars.

Women in this bracket value TV, although they don't rely on it or regard it as a pastime. This attitude is largely reflected in their tastes and habits. They are much more inclined to watch during late peak when the kids have gone to bed. This is fairly stable throughout the week. Interestingly, this demographic are more susceptible to time-shifted viewing than their male counterparts. Again, their demanding schedules are likely to dictate what they watch and when.

This is quite a high amount of people as it includes over ten and a half million men within the UK.This group of people have a high impact on the media industry as they continue the certain tasks that they carry out within their normal routines which is an advantage as they also continue to have the same patterns when it comes to use of media.
TV is a very important part of the lives for men within this category which is why they are classed as medium viewers.Looking at the viewing figures the men within this group watch more TV during the week as opposed to the weekend which is why they have high investments in purchasing TVs etc.A high amount of them also use sky and due to the upgrade some have also upgraded therefore showing their interest in television programs.

Housewives and children
There are currently over 6.5 million housewives with kids in the UK. Although there is an obvious cross-over between women 16-34 and ABC1 women, there are also some key points of differentiation.Firstly, housewives with kids are incredibly media-savvy and exposed to host of different formats and messages per day. 36 per cent of this audience cite TV viewing as their favourite TV pastime and as a result, over 80 per cent have access to digital, well above the national average. This partially reflect the effect of having children in the household (digital take-up is higher amongst young families) but is also indicative of their love of TV as a whole, not only during family time, but as valuable 'me time' away from the kids. Commercial channels are particularly well-received and account for two thirds of their viewing. ITV 2, Living TV, UKTV Style, E4 and the children's channels such as Nick Junior and Cartoon Network are amongst their favourites.
There is currently 6.5 million housewives with kids within the UK.Housewives with kids play a big role in the increase of views within the media industry as they watch television within the day and also pastime. One of the reason as to why they highly increase the views on television is because they not only watch television when having family time but also when having some alone time.
They have a range of channels in which they enjoy including ITV 2, Living TV and they also watch children's channels such as Cartoon network. They also have a lot of interest in soaps such as EastEnders and also like drama and other entertaining programs including the X-Factor.However they do not like programs based on religion, sport and politics.Despite not having much of an impact they also read newspapers and magazines in which they have high impact on especially those with gossip for example Heat!.

Primary research
Primary research is the research that is carried out in order to collect data that is non-existent. Primary research is done in different forms as experiments, tests and investigations can be done in order to acquire certain information. As primary research is first hand it does not come from published sources as these are within the category of secondary sources. Therefore primary research gives the researcher information regarding what customers need and also what they need to do in order to succeed within the market. Furthermore as primary research is data that is non-existent the data that the researcher obtains is up to date. Up to date information is important as this means that the researcher is informed of the current preferences of the market along with the new views and opinions.
Types of research: Quantitative data

Types of research: Quantitative data
Quantitative data is data that can be counted as it is identified on a numerical scale. This data is often collected through the use of experiments then statistically analysed. Quantitative data could either be counted or measured and uses surveys to collect large amounts of data. Therefore within the creative media industry the quantitative data will be based on the ratings, web hits etc. Having statistically analysed quantitative data is then represented visually in graphs and other things such as bar charts etc.
Qualitative data
Qualitative data is used to describe certain types of information. Qualitative data is used to characterise the characteristics or properties of a certain thing for example within the creative media industry they will have to look at opinions, attitudes etc. Qualitative research is more in-depth and focuses on getting answers to particular questions and concerns. Therefore the difference between quantitative and qualitative data is the different uses of this data in terms of information and use of number as qualitative data describes and quantitative data defines.

Purpose of Advertising
Can advertisers say whatever they want?
Introduction
Within this blog I will be looking at the reason behind why advertisements are made and the regulations regarding this industry. Therefore I will make analysis of the reasons behind why advertisements are made therefore giving me an insight on how effective the methods of communication through advertising are .
What is the point of advertising?
Draws attention
Firstly the most important purpose of advertising is the attention that it draws to a product or a service as this means that the target audience are made more aware of what the products and services of the business are.Through this the brand of the business is also strengthened as the business can outline whether the product or service is efficient or if the product is powerful strong etc.
Furthermore looking at the attention that is drawn by advertising this also means that the business gets a new set of audience as this means that the people who will be made aware will talk about the product or service through the word of mouth or through other uses of sources such as social media therefore meaning that the business gets free advertisement in which will have a longer effect and get to a wide range of people.
Secondly advertising helps the business get a profit as this an advertisement gives the business the opportunity to persuade old and potential customers why they should purchase the product or service that it offers. Therefore advertisement give customers that push to actually purchase the product therefore increasing the profits that the business gets,Furthermore advertising means that customers who are pleased with the product spread the news meaning an increase in the customers that people get.
Employment opportunities
Thirdly the advertisement industry provides opportunities as an amount of 20,000 people are employed within this sector. This is very important as this means that the advertising industry gets an improvement due to recruitment of employees who will provide something new.Furthermore as more people are employees are employed this means that the advertising industry advances and work is likely to be done more efficiently therefore meaning that operations go well.
Informs consumers of new products
Also the advertising industry keeps consumers up to date with new developments which is very important as this means that the products that are advertised receive more sales.Furthermore this means that due to this advertising industry receives more income.
Increases competition between businesses
Lastly advertising helps promote and stimulate competition as rivals have to ensure that they have a good advert that will compete with those that will be showed within that time and as one advertisement succeeds this means the need of another advertisement for other companies meaning a cycle that continues to promote the industry.
Can advertisers say whatever they want?
Ideology- This is the way in which a specific group of people think. Therefore the way of thinking of one person will differ from the other as they will have different opinions on that topic that will be raised.
Advertising Cigarette
Advertising Maltessers
Claims:
This cannot also be portrayed today as this is misleading the audience who will watch the advert as they will likely purchase the product if it makes you slim as opposed to other chocolates that are known to add wait due to high calories. This advert can be effective as it clearly sets a female target audience though conveying that Maltessers will make you slim. Therefore this helps in persuading the audience along with the text that is provided in which gives a clear detail of the product.
ASA
This stands for the advertising standards authority as this organisation checks adverts in order to check if they are not misleading and provide relevant information in regard to the product. This organisation also ensures that adverts do not discriminate meaning that if the advert may cause conflict it will be highly considered to be banned.
Reflecting onto this organisation's logo improvements can be made namely: Aiming for a wider range of audience for example young people though-
However referring back to this organisation it has a big impact in the advertising industry as this can stop certain adverts from carrying certain things out.Looking at the statistics in 2011

Nike golf advert analysis
Element
|
Denotation
|
Connotation
|
Camera shots and angles
|
The advert uses a range of camera shots as it aims to focus on different
things for example at the start a wide short is used to show the two
character which is followed by a close up shot on the golf balls they hit.
|
The different shots are used to show all the activity that is occurring
as the characters play golf.
|
Linear/Non linear
|
The advert has a linear structure as it shows a gradual increase the
characters are trying to enforce as they compete against each other in which
leads to the ending scene as Tiger Woods beats Rorry Mcllroy by doing a trick
in which he is unaware as to how it functions.
|
The advert’s use of linear is an effective way to convey the
storyline and build up the anxiety as to who will eventually beat the other
in the golf competition. This also helps in building up to the funny scene at
the end.
|
Sound
|
The main sounds are from the golf and also diegetic sound in the form
of trumpets.
|
The sound adds excitement in which the advert aims to do in order to
show golf as a interesting game therefore influencing customers to purchase
Nike golf equipment.
|
Structure
|
The structure is well constructed as the advert shows an exciting
match of golf in which is followed by comedy to make the main impact and make
audience remember.
|
The structure of the advert makes an effective message as it conveys
the humour well therefore making the advertisement memorable to audiences.
